🚁 India to Receive First Batch of US Apache Helicopters This Month

🚨 India to Get 1st Batch of US Apaches in July

NEW DELHI: India is set to receive the first batch of three Apache AH-64E attack helicopters from the United States around July 15, under a Rs 5,691 crore deal signed in February 2020. The delivery marks a significant boost to the Army’s combat capabilities, with the remaining three helicopters expected by November 2025.

The Apaches, often described as “tanks in the air,” are Boeing-manufactured heavy-duty gunships equipped with cutting-edge weapon systems. They will complement the 22 Apache helicopters already in service with the Indian Air Force (IAF), procured under a Rs 13,952 crore deal signed in September 2015.

🚁 What Makes the Apache Special?

The Apache AH-64E is considered one of the most advanced and lethal attack helicopters in the world. It is equipped with:

  • Stinger Air-to-Air Missiles for aerial combat.

  • Hellfire Longbow Air-to-Ground Missiles for precision strikes.

  • A 30mm chain gun and Hydra-70 rockets for ground assault.

  • Advanced sensors, targeting systems, and night-vision capabilities.

These features make the Apache ideal for operations in challenging terrains like the western front with Pakistan and high-altitude regions such as Ladakh.

πŸ“¦ Delivery Timeline and Challenges

The Army’s Apache squadron was raised in Jodhpur in March last year. However, the delivery of these helicopters faced delays due to global supply chain issues.

US Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth recently assured Defence Minister Rajnath Singh during a telephonic conversation that all six helicopters will be delivered this year.

⚔️ Boosting India’s Defence

The addition of Apaches will significantly improve India’s ability to conduct offensive operations and provide close air support to ground troops. These helicopters are especially valuable in anti-armour roles, giving the Indian Army a technological edge.

One Apache in IAF service was damaged during a hard landing near Khardung La in Ladakh on April 4, 2024, highlighting the tough conditions these helicopters often operate in.
